Celiac Disease is an intolerance to gluten. Gluten is a protein which is found in grass related grains such as semolina, wheat, rye and barley. When individuals with celiac disease ingest gluten, the villi, tiny hair-like projections in the small intestine that absorb nutrients from food, are damaged. Damaged villi do not effectively absorb the basic nutrients the body needs from the food ingested. The only treatment for celiac disease is the life long adherence to a strict gluten free diet. When gluten is removed from the diet, the small intestine will start to heal and overall health improves.

Conditions that may result from untreated celiac disease:

  • Iron Deficiency Anemia
  • Osteoporosis
  • Vitamin, mineral, and nutrient deficiencies
  • Intestinal and GI cancers
  • Lactose Intolerance
  • Thyroid Disease
  • Liver Disease
Researchers have determined that celiac disease is a genetic condition. In some cases, celiac disease is triggered by surgery, pregnancy, childbirth, viral infection or emotional stress. 1 out of 133 Americans have celiac disease and 97% of Americans remain undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.

Examples of some of the signs and symptoms are as follows:

  • IBS
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Anemia
  • Skin disorder
  • Upset Stomach
  • Joint Pains
  • Muscle Cramps
